Drugs and Substance Misuse Management Course

Course description

This programme is designed for staff working with juveniles and young offenders suffering symptoms and behavioural disturbance as a result of drugs and substance misuse. The course leaders and all external facilitators are all familiar with how the prison service operates and all have professional backgrounds in working directly with prisoners. There are many courses available to prison staff to raise awareness of drugs and substance misuse issues, but none are tailored specifically to working with the behavioural manifestations that result from drugs and substance misuse, particularly amongst juveniles. Drugs workers in prisons will readily say that, whilst they appreciate updates on what is happening in the drugs world, they are missing the skills that would provide them with a toolkit of interventions for addressing behavioural disturbance in prisoners. This course meets that demand and not only provides a theoretical background to a variety of therapeutic interventions, but also, provides the opportunity of full days supervised experiential skills practice to support the theory and practical application of skills.

The programme comprises 6 workshop based, mandatory units (days). In addition there is guided learning and assessment preparation time. The learning outcomes (LOs) for participants from each day are set out below:
