Mentoring Course

Investing in staff has as much value as investing in an organisation itself.
This is where mentoring, supervision and coaching take their place.

This one-day programme establishes a framework for creating cultural change so that through mentoring, supervision and coaching, employees can learn to identify key features in how other people think, work and behave in different situations. Developing an ability to see and manage another person’s, or group’s, point of view is key to effective working and therefore increases the potential effectiveness of a team or organisation.

This basic awareness programme comprises:

  • Examination of the differences between mentoring, supervision and coaching;
  • Identification of the qualities and skills of an effective mentor, supervisor and / or coach;
  • Application of the appropriate skills for the individual client;
  • Establishment and management of a mentoring, supervision and coaching contract;
  • Application of a client-centred approach to mentoring, supervision and coaching;
  • Basic communication skills practice to support the mentoring, supervision and coaching process;
  • Identification and practice of the micro-skills of developing rapport, attending and negotiating and influencing;
  • Examination of the key principles of working with people with different thinking and working styles;
  • Boundary recognition and referral;
  • Goal setting and problem solving.

Opportunities for participant progression

Participants completing this one-day programme have the background to undertake a higher level of training in mentoring, supervision and coaching. The course also provides the context for increasing self-awareness and enhancing professional practice through productive relationships that will support work/ life balance.

Assessment method and criteria

Each participant presents a learning statement for peer and facilitator assessment at the end of the day’s course. This will demonstrate that the participant has learned the principles and core values of mentoring, supervision and coaching.
